Moving? Here’s What You Need to Do First

Moving into a new apartment is an exciting part of adulthood, but besides the relocation of your belongings, there are other things you have to consider as well. Have you read and agree on the terms of the lease? How much is the rent and when is the payment due? Do you know who the official landlord is? How long is the notice period?

If you could answer all these questions, don’t think that you’re off the hook yet! You’re done with the formalities, now it’s time to do some dirty work before you call U-Haul.

1.       Change the locks of the main and back door. You don’t want your landlord sneaking up on you anytime of the day (or night). Besides, you don’t know when the locks were last changed, and the former tenants could still have access to the apartment. Better to be safe than sorry.
2.       Clean up the entire place. Regardless if the apartment has just been professionally cleaned, you’d still want to clean it your own way. It’s also a way to mark it as your own.
3.       Look for signs of bugs and rodents. You’ll find their droppings in corners in the kitchen. Better have that fixed before you move in with your furniture. Call up an exterminator to inspect your place and spray it down. You will need a few days to air out the place before moving in this case.
4.       Install new a toilet seat. Imagine all the strangers who sat on that throne. Replace it with a new one and give the bathroom a good scrubbing.
5.       Clean up the fridge. Don’t fill up the fridge just yet without scrubbing and disinfecting it first. Used coffee grounds are great for getting rid of any smell.
6.       Find the outlets. Plan where to place for your furniture and appliances by knowing where the outlets are.
7.       Get a renter’s insurance. A lot of renters think it’s expensive but you can protect your property by as little as $15 a month. There are lots of ways you can save on the monthly payments too so don’t let the word “insurance” make you think of additional expenses because this one is worth it.
